All What and How’s About Pool Ionizer
What are Pool Ionizers?
Pool ionizers help you get softer, silkier pool water.
Pool ionizers, also known as mineralizers, play an instrumental role in removing bacteria and preventing algae. It typically uses copper and silver ions to kill bacteria and remove algae from pool water. Ionizing your pool means adding heavy metals to kill bacteria when exposure is long enough.
Pool ionizers can be an electric in-line device, which is connected directly to the pump and filter system, or solar pool ionizers, which float in the pool like a chlorine dispenser.
How do Pool Ionizers Work?
Pool ionizers play a significant role in killing bacteria and algae and preventing other pathogens. A pool may need an oxidizer or other tools to supplement as it cannot rely on just one ionizer for sanitation. Ionizers work slowly and thus require other sanitizers, such as chlorine, to make the pool safe for swimming and oxidizers to eliminate organic contaminants.
Even there has been a study that shows that combined with low levels of chlorine, ionizers were more effective at keeping pools sanitized than higher levels of chlorine alone. Copper and silver ions also have long-term residual disinfecting power, which keeps the pool safer even when the chlorine begins to dissipate.
Some of the functionalities of pool ionizers are as follows:
- It makes the pool water much silkier and smoother.
- There is no noticeable foul taste or unpleasant smell when you add the ionizer to the pool.
- Ions and minerals provide long-lasting antibacterial properties as they do not degrade that easily.
- Significant reduction in pool chemical usage, thus saving money while effectively eliminating chemical irritation like red eyes, skin reactions, and itchy skin.
- These ions don’t form any by-products such as chloramines and are generally not corrosive at all.
- Copper ions keep algae away.
A pool ionizer is very effective in keeping pool water healthy. However, there are certain limitations too. Like it adds to the maintenance work. If it is not maintained well, it can cause stains on the surface of the pool.
How to Install A Pool Ionizer?
Though it is best to hire an expert pool contractor for seamless installation as they can align the ionizer proficiently if you want to do it by yourself, here’s how to install a pool ionizer:
There are some tools and material requirements, along with some plumbing for the pool ionizer installation process, such as:
- PVC primer and PVC solvent cement
- Hack Saw or Reciprocating saw
- Tape Measure
- Pen or Marker
- Drill Machine, and
- Screwdriver
If you are installing a new ionizer in an old pool, the perfect place would be close to the chlorinator.
It also depends upon the type of ionizer you are installing.
The electrode in the ionizer can be installed in any direction that suits the conditions. Many manufactures install electrodes in the upright position, although they can also be installed vertically.
The best position is determined based on the design, size, and control systems of the pool. You have to keep in mind the location and functionality of the pool filter and heater as well.
Before installing, you must make sure that the pump is turned off.
Take measurements and place a mark on the section of tubing that you need to remove for the electrolytic cell/electrode installation.
Be aware of the additional space that may be required as a shock absorber for better installation.
With the help of a saw and cutter, shape the pipe section.
Test electrode fit as part of the confirmation of proper size.
It is recommended to leave 1 to 2 inches of clearance for most installations as room for maneuver.
Now use the primer and clean the PVC pipe carefully.
Repeat the same process for the other side and attach the electrode.
Finally, install the electronic controller in a location where a power supply is available to the unit. Make sure the wire can reach the electrolytic cell. It is suggested to place the controller in a location where it can remain protected from damaging elements. You can use a drill or screwdriver to mount the bracket.
At any point of time during the installation process, if you feel stuck, it is best to seek professional help. Hire an expert contractor so that you don’t face any problems in the future. The following steps would ensure everything is working fine:
• Recirculate the water: Circulating the water tests the pool water and its quality. You need to recirculate the water for the better functioning of the pool ionizer.
• Check for leaks: Now check for any possible water leaks. Check all the sources, such as the point of install to ensure there is no leaking from the electrolytic cell. You can add glue to fix any potential water leaks. Most leaks can easily be fixed by tightening the joints and unions around the electrode.
• Balance the Water Chemistry: You need to refer to any pool water manual provided to balance the water. Add the chemicals or follow the relevant process for healthy pool water.
• Set the Controller: Fix the controller and other accessories neatly. Don’t forget that the higher-wattage controllers often require a larger ion dose and are generally designed for larger pools. You should check the size of the pool beforehand and use the appropriate model of the controller.
• Testing: Finally do the practical pool test to see if everything is working fine.
If you want to reduce the use of pool chemicals and make the pool water softer and gentler on skin, hair, and eyes, an ionizer is the best thing for you. But remember, sometimes ionizers need time to be effective and function properly.
